V-Day 2009 Beneficiaries

Our performances will support the following six charities working to end violence against women locally and internationally across the disciplines of medicine, asylum and trafficking, mental health and education. We have chosen this diverse group to highlight the pervasive and insidious nature of violence against women, which affects each of our lives, regardless of gender.

Ending violence against women in the UK:

The Helen Bamber Foundation: We will support the Foundation's Women's Programme, which offers holistic support to women who have survived situations of trafficking, torture, sexual exploitation/slavery and other gross human rights violations. They provide healthcare, psychotherapy, psychiatry, somatic/body therapies, creative groups, legal advocacy, and other social services. The Foundation also seeks to educate and engage the local and global community through arts-based events, such as the public exhibition 'Journey - Against Sex Trafficking' (www.the-journey.co.uk)

Tender: We will support Tender's education programmes in Greater London, which use drama and art-based practice with children in schools, Pupil Referral Units and youth centres to prevent domestic abuse and sexual violence and promote healthy relationships based on equality and respect. They also offer violence prevention and domestic violence awareness training for adults to challenge violence-tolerant attitudes and equip adults to support young people.

Woman's Trust: We will support the work of Woman's Trust, an independent, confidential and client led service mental health and support service for women affected by domestic violence, offering one-to-one counselling, weekly support groups and self-development workshops for women and advocacy for women who live in the London boroughs Westminster, Kensington & Chelsea and Greenwich. They also offer a comprehensive programme of domestic violence training for front-line workers in the public sector via training courses which are usually one day or two day events in central London.
Ending violence against women in Africa and Asia:

The Ubuntu Education Fund:We will support Ubuntu's new programme in South Africa to support teenage girls who have become heads of household due to the loss of parents to AIDS, as well as their innovative 'Men as Partners' programme, whereby outreach facilitators run creative, positive and engaging workshops for men to eliminate violence toward women and promote healthy, loving partnerships.

Women and Children First: We will support WCF's current work in Malawi, India and Bangladesh, where they work to prevent gross medical neglect, reduce maternal death and empower women to control decisions that influence their health. They provide community mobilisation programmes, which establish monthly women's groups supported by a local woman who has been selected and trained to act as a facilitator, and advocate for improved maternal health by lobbying both national and international policymakers and service providers.

V-Day/UNICEF Democratic Republic of Congo Campaign: We will support 'Stop Raping our Greatest Resource: Power to Women in the DRC' a campaign to raise awareness about the current extreme sexual violence in the Congo, advocating for change on local, provincial, national and international levels, providing support for activists in the DRC and around the globe who are working to end the atrocities and change perceptions about sexual violence, and raising funds to build the City of Joy in Bukavu - a project of Panzi Hospital in partnership with V-Day and UNICEF - a refuge for survivors of rape and torture, providing treatment, leadership development, educational and income-generating opportunities.

V-Statement

V-Day is an organized response against violence toward women.

V-Day is a vision: We see a world where women live safely and freely.

V-Day is a demand: Rape, incest, battery, genital mutilation and sexual slavery must end now.

V-Day is a spirit: We believe women should spend their lives creating and thriving rather than surviving or recovering from terrible atrocities.

V-Day is a catalyst: By raising money and consciousness, it will unify and strengthen existing anti-violence efforts. Triggering far-reaching awareness, it will lay the groundwork for new educational, protective, and legislative endeavors throughout the world.

V-Day is a process: We will work as long as it takes. We will not stop until the violence stops.

V-Day is a day. We proclaim Valentine's Day as V-Day, to celebrate women and end the violence.

V-Day is a fierce, wild, unstoppable movement and community. Join us!
